NGE Mourns Slain Journalist In Zamfara

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) says it is concerned over the rising lawlessness and insecurity plaguing Nigeria.

Their alarm followed the killing of Hamisu Danjibga, a journalist with Voice of Nigeria (VON), in Zamfara State.

The Guild called for improved security measures to protect all Nigerians, especially journalists who carry out their legitimate duties.

Danjibga was recognised as one of the dedicated journalists who reported on the activities of dangerous terrorists and criminals in the state before his tragic death.

In a statement on Wednesday, following a Standing Committee meeting held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the professional body of editors in Nigeria also conveyed their apprehension about the prevailing state of insecurity, particularly in the South-East region, but applauded governors of the region for their efforts to address these challenges collectively.

President of the NGE, Eze Anaba and General Secretary, Dr Iyobosa Uwugiaren who jointly signed the statement, said governments bear the responsibility of securing lives and property, saying the ongoing insecurity was an abdication of that duty.

They emphasised that the situation in the South-East was not only a regional concern but also a nationwide threat, calling for lasting solutions.

The Guild also expressed concern over the abduction of 33 people, including 24 students at Federal University, Gusau.

“Though 16, including 14 students were said to have been released as on Monday, we call on the federal government to spare no effort in ensuring the release of the remaining abducted persons and finding a lasting solution to such menace”, the statement said

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to security agencies on this matter was commended, and the NGE expressed their eagerness to see the directive implemented, it added.
