More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged. The rapid escalation has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee within Congo and into neighboring Burundi and Rwanda, it added. EASTER: IGNORE PASSENGER'S CALL FOR OVERSPEEDING- FRSC ADVISES DRIVERS. (PHOTO).

Easter : Ignore passengers’ call for overspeeding— FRSC advises drivers

The Edo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has advised motorists to ignore passengers who often instigate them to overspeed with the excuse of being in haste.

The FRSC State Sector Commander, Paul Okpe, said that such passengers also contribute to road crashes and should be ignored.

Okpe gave the advice during a road show as part of activities to sensitise road users to the need to be safety-conscious on the road.

The sector commander urged motorists and other road users to obey traffic rules and regulations to stay alive during the Easter celebration.

While noting that the sensitisation was necessary due to the attitude of drivers in the state, he added that one has to be alive to celebrate.

“Before embarking on any journey during this period, check your vehicle to ascertain whether your brake, light, fire extinguisher, and tyre, among others, are in good condition.

“While on the road, you have to obey traffic rules by wearing a seatbelt, avoiding overloading and speeding, dangerous driving and route violations, among others. You can celebrate with your family while alive.

“I urged motorists to drive at minimal speed and respect other road users, as it is those that are alive that will celebrate the season,” he said.

According to him, the corps would deploy men and officers across the state to ensure a hitch-free celebration.

He appealed to other stakeholders to support FRSC in curtailing road crashes, especially during the festive periods so that travellers will arrive at their destinations safely.
