ECOWAS Parliament Seeks to Reengage Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Amid Exit Threats

As Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger remain firm in their decision to exit ECOWAS, the West African bloc's parliament is determined to bring them back into the fold. Benjamin Kalu, Vice President of Nigeria's House of Representatives, emphasized that ECOWAS is employing parliamentary diplomacy to address the situation.

Kalu explained that diplomatic letters have already been sent to these countries, and soon, ECOWAS representatives will visit them to engage in dialogue with their leaders. "We will open the doors for them to return to the family; we need them. We will acknowledge their grievances and urge them to sit down with us to discuss the issues," Kalu said.

He said ignoring these nations is not an option. "We must reach out and show that we are stronger together as a family. I am confident that this approach will succeed," he added.

Kalu also downplayed concerns about the potential impact of these departures on ECOWAS, particularly regarding the threat of violent extremism and the financial stability of the bloc.

He assured that ECOWAS has various funding sources and development partners who are committed to the region, and they are prepared to streamline and increase financial support if necessary.
