June 14 has been proclaimed “Igbo Day” in North Carolina, USA.
Yes. You read that right! Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has proclaimed June 14, 2025, as “Igbo Day” in the state.
Across oceans and continents, where our people have planted new roots and carried our name with pride, the world is watching, and honoring us.
In the proclamation, the Governor highlighted that thousands of Igbo people have lived in North Carolina for decades, preserving their heritage and promoting cultural values. He commended the work of the Igbo Day Festival Organization,founded in 2022, which has brought families together and created opportunities to share Igbo music, art, and traditions with the broader community.
The document noted that the first Igbo Day Festival, held on July 10, 2022, was a major step in strengthening cultural pride and unity. Governor Stein also praised the Igbo community’s outstanding contributions in fields such as education, healthcare, technology, business, law, and the arts.
In addition to professional excellence, the Governor acknowledged the community’s commitment to service, supporting schools, hospitals, food pantries, women’s shelters, and environmental cleanup efforts.
The proclamation emphasized that the values and contributions of Ndi Igbo enrich the social fabric of North Carolina. As such, the Governor urged all citizens to observe and participate in Igbo Day celebrations on June 14, 2025, in recognition of the community’s positive impacts.
