The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has expressed confidence that members who recently defected to an opposition coalition will return, emphasizing the PDP’s unmatched inclusivity. His remarks come in response to the coalition’s unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its official platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
On Wednesday, the coalition, which includes prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and several former governors, announced the ADC as its political base during a meeting in Abuja. At the event, ADC leaders stepped down, paving the way for David Mark to be appointed interim national chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as interim national secretary.
Addressing a press briefing in Abuja, Damagum issued a stern warning to PDP members engaging in anti-party activities, hinting at disciplinary measures. “To those contemplating [defection], they should not. There’s nowhere as accommodating as our party. But if they feel there are, I wish them good luck. I know they will run back,” he said. He further cautioned, “We are drawing a line for those who go to demarket the party. We are watching them and will take appropriate actions at the right time.”
Damagum’s statements highlight rising tensions within the PDP as defections threaten its unity ahead of the 2027 elections, while the opposition coalition strengthens its position under the ADC banner.
