 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  Suspect Arrested for Brutal Murder in Tjibeng Village


A 40-year-old man is expected to appear before the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court in connection with the murder of a 37-year-old man at Tjibeng village during the early hours of Saturday, 30 August 2025.


Police were alerted around 02:30 about a man found lying unconscious on the street. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim in a pool of blood with severe head injuries. He was wearing a black T-shirt, blue trousers, and white takkies. Several stones were also found next to the body, suggesting he was stoned to death.


Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned and certified the victim dead at the scene.


An immediate manhunt was launched, and the suspect was apprehended later the same morning at about 07:30 in the same village.


The motive behind the attack is still under investigation. Police indicated that the deceased, who is alleged to have been a security officer, will be identified in due course.
