Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. Colombia constructing future longest tunnel in Latin America

Colombia is moving forward with one of Latin America’s largest infrastructure projects: the Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri Toyo Tunnel. When finished, it will be the continent’s longest vehicular tunnel, stretching five miles between Medellín and the Urabá region. The tunnel is a central part of the “New Route to the Sea,” a 23-mile corridor that also includes bridges, viaducts, and smaller tunnels.

The project is expected to dramatically reduce travel times and boost economic activity in northwestern Colombia by improving the transport of agricultural and industrial goods to the Caribbean, while strengthening connectivity between the interior and the coast. Construction began several years ago, and in June, the Antioquia provincial government and Medellín city authorities completed the lining of the main tunnel, finishing 99% of the first section. The Toyo Tunnel is located in the mountainous department of Antioquia, whose capital, Medellín, is Colombia’s second-largest city.

The megaproject will cut nearly five hours off travel between Medellín and the future Urabá ports, a key export hub on the Caribbean. The first section has cost more than $675 million, with additional contributions from Medellín city to support regional competitiveness. The second section, linking Santa Fe de Antioquia and Giraldo, has surpassed 60% completion. This phase includes 11 more tunnels, 13 bridges, and nearly eight miles of open roadway to connect the main tunnel with the highway to Urabá. Authorities aim to finish this segment by the end of 2026, with the full route expected to open in early 2027.
