AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  Kaduna Govt Reaffirms Commitment To Press Freedom

The Kaduna State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom, stating that the administration of Governor Uba Sani has strengthened media engagement as part of efforts to promote transparent and inclusive governance.

The State Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, made this known on Saturday in Kaduna during the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ (NUJ) Chairman’s Night organised by the Kaduna State Council of the union.

Maiyaki said the current administration had intentionally embraced openness and accessibility, noting that relations between the government and the media were more cordial and constructive compared to previous years.

Represented at the event by the Director of Media Relations and Citizen Engagement in the ministry, Malam Yunusa Abdullahi, the commissioner said journalists now enjoy improved access to information and government officials.

“Under Governor Uba Sani, government, media relations have witnessed significant improvement. This administration places high value on access, engagement and respect for press freedom, allowing journalists to work professionally and contribute meaningfully to public discourse,” he said.

Maiyaki explained that effective communication had enhanced public understanding of government policies and programmes across the state, adding that improved information flow had also contributed to peacebuilding and social cohesion.

He emphasised the importance of accurate and timely information dissemination, especially in a diverse state like Kaduna, where misinformation could easily fuel tension.

The commissioner urged journalists to uphold professional ethics and avoid the spread of false or misleading information.

“We must ensure that facts, not falsehoods, shape public opinion. Responsible journalism is crucial to sustaining peace, democracy and development,” he added.

Maiyaki was honoured with an award for Outstanding Media Achievements by the NUJ in recognition of his leadership in information management in the state.

Other award recipients included the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibraheem Musa, alongside journalists from national and local media organisations and veteran practitioners.
