Blake Garrett, former child actor from How to Eat Fried Worms, dies at 33

Blake Garrett, a former child actor best known for playing Plug in the family comedy How to Eat Fried Worms, has died in Oklahoma at the age of 33.

His mother, Carol Garrett, said he passed away on Sunday, Feb. 8, and the family is awaiting autopsy results to determine an official cause of death. She shared that Blake had visited the emergency room last week due to severe pain and was diagnosed with shingles. She expressed concern that he may have self-medicated to manage the pain, suggesting his death could have been a tragic accident.

Born on September 14, 1992, in Austin, Texas, Garrett began performing at age 8 in local theater, taking lead roles such as the magician in Aladdin and his Magical Lamp and Charlie Brown in Peanuts: A Charlie Brown Tribute. His stage credits also included The Wizard of Oz, Annie, and Grease.

Garrett earned a Young Artist Award in 2007 for Best Young Ensemble in a Feature Film for his work in How to Eat Fried Worms, the 2006 children’s comedy directed by Bob Dolman and based on Thomas Rockwell’s 1973 book. The film also starred James Rebhorn, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and Tom Cavanagh.

At age 10, Garrett toured internationally with the arena show Barney’s Colorful World from 2003 to 2004, playing the role of Mike, a part he also reprised in the show’s video release.
