 Naira jumps to 8-month high of 1,120/$ as dollars flood black market The Naira on Thursday rose to an eight-month high of 1,120 per dollar on the parallel market, popularly called black market, driven by a series of foreign exchange (FX) reforms of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that has unlocked dollar liquidity. With the current exchange rate the Naira has gained 62.95 percent (N705) over the dollar compared to the level of N1,825/$1 in February 2024, according to the data compiled from online platforms and street traders. “The dollar has fallen because there is no demand. The market is calm due to the holidays and there are enough dollars in the market now,” one trader told BusinessDay on Thursday. Nigeria’s currency on Monday before the holidays strengthened to 1,230.61 per dollar on the official FX market, despite the declining external reserves.  Govt orders demolition of four-storey buildings in Onitsha Anambra State government has ordered the demolition of two four-storey buildings, located at Amobi Street in Onitsha South Local Government Area of the state. The ordered demolition was aimed at averting imminent collapse of the affected buildings and the attendant casualties, following incessant building collapses and casualties which occurred in the area when some buildings under construction collapsed and killed over eight persons and injured no fewer than 26 persons between February and March. MAGIC FM gathered that the two buildings, housing over 800 shops, designed to serve commercial purposes, have been paid for by traders, before the final completion of the project. Findings showed that the decked portion of one of the buildings had already collapsed as a result of use of poor and substandard materials for the project. JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs Fabian Benjamin confirmed the readiness of the notification slip which shows the candidates’ examination date, venue, and time. “The 2024 UTME Notification Slip is ready for printing.  Gunmen attack police checkpoint in Ebonyi Gunmen, on Thursday, attacked a police checkpoint along the Abakaliki-Enugu Highway and set a police patrol van belonging on fire. The incident happened at the Ishieke Junction on the outskirts of Abakaliki metropolis. Sources in the area said the gunmen killed one policeman and abducted another, but this could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report. The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the attack. He, however, denied knowledge of the killing or abduction of any police officer saying reports from the scene were still sketchy. He said, “An incident happened this morning, but I am still trying to put the details. “At this point, I can’t confirm much. Let me get my facts right. “I just got information that there was an attack at that point, but I don’t have any other information.”
