More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged. The rapid escalation has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee within Congo and into neighboring Burundi and Rwanda, it added. TRAGEDY IN KOGI

MAN LOSES LIFE INTERVENING IN ARGUMENT OVER URINATION

A man lost his life in Kogi state's Adavi local government area after attempting to settle a dispute between two men regarding public urination.

The victim, Orishagbemi Sunday, was 39 years old. The tragedy occurred when Orishagbemi attempted to calm his friend and another man engaged in an argument over the act of urinating in public.

The incident was confirmed by the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya.

According to reports, the deceased's friend, who works as a vulcanizer at Ganaja junction, Lokoja, urinated close to a building owned by a resident of the area.

The resident's son, Sadiq, took issue with the action, sparking a heated argument. Concerned by the altercation, Orishagbemi intervened to try and resolve the situation, but the building owner's son pulled out a knife and fatally stabbed him.

The suspect is now in police custody, and investigations are ongoing. Once the investigation is completed, the suspect will be prosecuted in court, as promised by Ayah during an interview with journalists in Lokoja.
