Stormzy banned from driving in the UK for mobile phone use

Popular British rapper Stormzy has been banned from driving for nine months after being caught using a mobile phone while behind the wheel of his Rolls-Royce.

The Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court issued the ruling on Thursday, following the artist’s guilty plea submitted via a letter.

The incident occurred on March 7, 2024, in West Kensington, where an off-duty police officer spotted the rapper engaging in the illegal act.

District Judge Andrew Sweet, who presided over the case, described Stormzy’s actions as “dangerous and irresponsible” and highlighted the artist’s poor driving record. In addition to the ban, the court imposed a £2,010 ($2,498) fine and added six penalty points to his licence.

This latest offence brings Stormzy’s tally to 12 penalty points, surpassing the threshold for disqualification under UK law. Drivers in the UK face a ban if they accumulate 12 or more points within a three-year period.

The rapper had previously accrued six points on his licence for a speeding offence, which Judge Sweet noted while delivering the verdict.
