Reckless Truck Driver Maims LASTMA Officer in Lagos

A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday at the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos State when a reckless truck driver lost control of his vehicle, crushing and severely injuring an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The driver of the fully loaded trailer, registered as KTG 33 ZZ in Bauchi State, was reportedly speeding excessively when he lost control, resulting in the devastating crash.

The incident happened just as the LASTMA officer was beginning his afternoon shift, highlighting the dangers posed by careless driving on public roads.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the trailer was coming from Agidingbi via Oba Ogunji Road, heading towards Omole Junction in the Ogba area when the driver, traveling at high speed, lost control and struck the officer.

The impact caused severe injuries, including multiple fractures to the officer’s right leg and hand. He was immediately rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for urgent medical treatment.

In an attempt to escape justice, the truck driver fled the scene but was swiftly apprehended through the combined efforts of security operatives from the Ojodu Police Station and vigilant LASTMA officials.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki visited the injured officer at LASUTH, where doctors determined that the severity of his injuries required an immediate amputation of his right leg.

Condemning the reckless driving that led to the tragedy, Bakare-Oki emphasized that such incidents could be avoided if drivers adhered to safety regulations. He urged truck and trailer operators, as well as all motorists, to prioritize road safety, stressing the importance of human life.

“LASTMA officers are not enemies of motorists; they are committed to ensuring smooth traffic flow, which is essential for economic growth and urban efficiency in Lagos,” he stated.

Expressing his sympathies, Bakare-Oki assured that the government would cover the officer’s medical expenses and provide full support throughout his recovery.

“The government will not abandon you; we are with you throughout this difficult period,” he assured.
