Construction crane collapses onto passenger train in Thailand, killing at least 31

At least 31 people were killed Wednesday when a construction crane for a high-speed rail bridge collapsed onto a moving passenger train in Thailand, officials reported. Another 64 people were injured, with thirty of the dead pronounced at the scene and one more dying while being transported to a hospital, according to the Thai Ministry of Public Health.

The accident occurred around 9 a.m. as the train traveled between Nong Nam Khun and Sikhiu stations in Nakhon Ratchasima province. The crane struck the train, causing it to derail and catch fire, leaving many passengers trapped in the carriages. The train, which departed from Bangkok, was carrying 195 passengers and staff members. Multiple rescue teams were deployed to assist those trapped and injured.

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said investigators were working at the scene to identify victims and verify the death toll. The initial reports indicated four fatalities, but the number rose throughout the day as authorities updated their counts. The bodies were transferred to Sikhiu Hospital, while the injured were treated at several local hospitals, with eleven still hospitalized by late afternoon. The train involved was Special Express Train No. 21, which runs between Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani in northeastern Thailand.
