Hilary Knight sets new US Olympic record in women’s hockey

Team USA captain Hilary Knight has cemented her place in Olympic history at the 2026 Winter Games. Knight scored a crucial goal in the final two minutes of the third period of the gold medal game against Canada, tying the match and sending it into overtime. That goal also gave her the most career goals in U.S. women’s hockey Olympic history, surpassing the previous mark shared by Natalie Darwitz and Katie King.

Knight has been breaking records throughout the Milan Cortina Games. Earlier in the tournament, she tied the U.S. women’s Olympic career scoring record by assisting on Caroline Harvey’s opening goal against Canada, giving her 32 points and matching Jenny Potter’s career total. Knight was retroactively credited with the assist after a video review. Additionally, she became the first U.S. hockey player to compete in five Winter Olympics, having represented Team USA in Vancouver (2010), Sochi (2014), Pyeongchang (2018), Beijing (2022), and now Milan Cortina (2026). She previously won gold in 2018 and silver medals in 2010, 2014, and 2022.

The milestone came during the gold medal match against Canada, a team that has faced challenges during the tournament. Team USA has dominated, defeating Canada 5-0 in the preliminary round—their first shutout against Canada in Olympic play—and outscoring all six opponents 31-1, while maintaining more than 331 minutes without allowing a goal since a second-period score by Barbora Jurickova in the tournament opener against Czechia.
