 Jason Bateman reveals Katharine Hepburn told him to 'stop acting,' offering 'really great' but 'painful' advice


Jason Bateman recently reflected on a formative moment early in his career when he worked alongside Katharine Hepburn in the 1994 TV movie This Can’t Be Love. Cast as Hepburn’s driver in a dynamic reminiscent of Driving Miss Daisy, Bateman recalled struggling through a scene that required him to cry on cue. 


As he forced the emotion, Hepburn interrupted the take with a blunt but memorable piece of advice: “Oh, stop acting.” Initially confused, Bateman realized she was urging him to deliver the scene naturally rather than trying to manufacture tears.


That lesson stuck with him. Bateman explained that once he stopped attempting to manipulate the audience and instead focused on being authentic, the emotion flowed more easily. 


Hepburn’s guidance, though difficult to hear at first, became a valuable reminder about the importance of honesty in performance. The experience underscored the power of simplicity and truth in acting, shaping Bateman’s approach to his craft in the years that followed.


During the same podcast interview, Bateman also shared his admiration for several actors he considers among the greatest.


 He named Daniel Day-Lewis as the finest living performer, praised Christian Bale for his intensity and versatility, and expressed excitement about working with Sam Rockwell on his upcoming Netflix project The Cackling of the Dodos. 


For Bateman, these encounters and influences highlight the ongoing thrill of learning from legends while continuing to grow as an artist himself.
