 Spain seeks to join South Africa’s case at top UN court accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza Spain became on Thursday the first European country to ask a United Nations court for permission to join South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. South Africa filed its case with the International Court of Justice late last year. It alleged that Israel was breaching the genocide convention in its military assault that has laid waste to large swaths of Gaza. The court has ordered Israel to immediately halt its military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah but stopped short of ordering a cease-fire for the enclave.  LP bows to pressure, renames ‘Obidient Directorate’ Amid controversy surrounding the naming and composition of the leadership structure of the “Obidient Directorate,” the National Working Committee of the Labour Party, LP, has renamed the directorate. This was disclosed in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, on Thursday. According to him, the Obidient Directorate will now be known and referred to as the Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration.  NDIC to pay Heritage Bank depositors N650 billion this week The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) announced plans to pay 2.3 million depositors of Heritage Bank approximately N650 billion starting this week. This move follows the recent withdrawal of Heritage Bank’s operating licence. NDIC Managing Director Mr. Bello Hassan made this announcement during a briefing in Abuja. He explained that the majority of Heritage Bank’s depositors, 99.9 per cent, have less than N5 million in their accounts. This means the NDIC expects to process these insured deposits swiftly. There are about 4,000 depositors with more than N5 million in their accounts. Before losing its license, Heritage Bank had issued over N700 billion in loans. To manage the payment process, NDIC has deployed 400 staff members across the bank’s 116 branches and regional offices. Hajj 2024: NDLEA arrests intending pilgrims with cocaine consignments Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have raided Emerald Hotel, Ladipo area of Oshodi, Lagos state where some intending pilgrims to the ongoing hajj in Saudi Arabia were lodged and caught in the act of ingesting wraps of cocaine ahead of their flight to the holy land on Wednesday, June 5. Those arrested during the intelligence-led operation include: Usman Kamorudeen, 31; Olasunkanmi Owolabi, 46; Fatai Yekini, 38; and a lady, Ayinla Kemi, 34.  The four suspects were lodged in two rooms in the hotel where they had prepared 200 pellets of cocaine weighing 2.20 kilograms to swallow when NDLEA officers stormed their rooms.  One hundred wraps of the Class A substance were recovered from each of the two rooms bringing the total seizure to 200 wraps.
