DreamWorks releases first trailer for Shrek 5, marking return to franchise after 15 years with original cast and new characters
DreamWorks has released the first official trailer for “Shrek 5,” marking the franchise’s return to the swamp after more than 15 years.
The trailer, released Tuesday, brings back original voice cast members Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy, while also introducing new additions to Shrek’s family. Comedian Marcello Hernandez and actor Skyler Gisondo voice Shrek and Fiona’s sons, Fergus and Farkle. A previously teased daughter, Felicia—voiced by Zendaya—did not appear in the trailer.
Universal Pictures describes “Shrek 5” as a new comedic adventure, though plot details remain limited. Early footage suggests Shrek and his family may find themselves in trouble, including a sequence that shows them imprisoned alongside Donkey. Familiar characters from the “Far, Far Away” universe, including the Gingerbread Man, also make appearances.
The film is scheduled for release in summer 2027 and is directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, both of whom have worked on earlier entries in the franchise as well as other major animated films.
The announcement follows earlier backlash over changes to the film’s animation style when it was first revealed in February 2025, a teaser that drew millions of views and sparked comparisons to other animated franchises that revised their visual style after fan criticism.
The “Shrek” universe now spans seven films in total, including the main series and the “Puss in Boots” spin-offs, with further character returns still unconfirmed.
