Kaduna: Dung Nikyob Cultural Festival Holds 15 Years After Suspension Due To Insecurity

The Dung Nikyob cultural festival of the Kannikon Chiefdom in the south of Kaduna state made it's return on Friday after a 15 year hiatus caused by security challenges in the area.

Speaking at the festival, which coincides with the silver jubilee celebration of the Chiefdom, the paramount ruler, Tanko Tete, said the occasion was an avenue for making friends with people from far and wide.

"From time immemorial Dung Nikyob is a Nikyob national festival that involves the entire Nikyob people.

"Today, it involves those around us and beyond. In the olden days, it could be a celebration of anniversary of the death of a famous person," he added.

Tete noted that vibrant celebration not only showcases the rich heritage of the community, but serves as a testament to the resilience and unity of the people.

He lauded the state and federal government's efforts at restoring peace in the area and called on the people to maintain the peace.

He appealed to the Kaduna state government to rehabilitate the Kafanchan-Ungwan Fari-Bakin Kogi road to open the Chiefdom for easy transportation of farm produce.

In his remarks, Gov. Uba Sani, represented by his Counsellor on political affairs, Ado Audu, lauded the exhibition and display of the rich cultural heritage of the Kannikon people.

He restated the government's resolve to support the development of the Chiefdom including the refurbishment of the Chief's palace.

In his remarks, the Nikyob Development Association President, Manasseh Tukson, commended the state governor for giving all parts of the state a sense of belonging.

Tukson urged the governor to consider upgrading it's paramount ruler from a third to a first class chief.

Also speaking, Sen. Sunday Katung, who served as the chairman of the occasion, stressed that the 2026 Dung Nikyob sends a clear message that Southern Kaduna stands united for progress.

Katung maintained that he will continue to push for policies and projects that have direct bearing on the people of the zone.

This year's celebration, which had the theme 'promoting unity, culture and development', featured colourful cultural displays among others.
