Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has begun preventive radiation treatment after being diagnosed with early-stage skin cancer, according to doctors and his office.
The 80-year-old leader recently had a basal cell lesion removed on April 24. His medical team said follow-up care will include superficial radiotherapy on the scalp as a precautionary measure to prevent additional lesions, while noting that he is expected to continue his normal daily schedule without restrictions.
Officials said the diagnosis involved a small, early-stage cancerous lesion. Lula is scheduled to undergo about 15 radiotherapy sessions as part of the preventive treatment plan.
The Brazilian president, who is the country’s oldest sitting leader, has faced several health issues in recent years, including emergency procedures in 2024 related to bleeding in the head and a prior bout of throat cancer in 2011.
Lula is also expected to seek another presidential term in the upcoming election cycle and currently leads some opinion polling scenarios against potential challengers in a possible runoff.
