Princess Kate had a touching personal moment during her visit to Italy after her late dog Lupo unexpectedly became part of a classroom activity.
The Princess of Wales, 44, was visiting Scuola Comunale d'infanzia Anna Frank in Reggio Emilia on May 13 to learn more about the well-known Reggio Emilia Approach to early childhood education when the emotional exchange happened.
While sitting with children during one of the learning sessions, Kate looked through papers featuring animal names written in Italian. One word immediately caught her attention, “Lupo,” which translates to “wolf.”
The moment clearly struck a chord with the princess.
“Our dog was called Lupo. We had a dog that was called Lupo,” she said warmly, placing a hand against her chest as she smiled.
According to reports, someone nearby then asked whether she knew the meaning behind the name.
Kate confirmed she did, but laughed while explaining that the name did not exactly match the family pet’s appearance.
When another voice joked that Lupo must have been a large dog because of the name, the princess laughed and clarified that he actually was not very big at all.
“He had a big personality,” she added fondly while using her hands to show his size.
Lupo held a special place within the Wales family for years. The black cocker spaniel was the first dog owned together by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales after their marriage.
Back in 2020, the couple shared the sad news of Lupo’s passing in an emotional public message, saying the beloved pet had been “at the heart” of their family for nine years.
The dog was reportedly gifted to the royal couple by Kate’s brother, James Middleton, shortly after their 2011 wedding.
James later revealed in his memoir that Lupo had been intended as a belated wedding present.
Over the years, Lupo became familiar to royal watchers after appearing in several family photos, including adorable birthday portraits of Prince George.
Before Lupo’s passing, James Middleton also gave the family another black cocker spaniel named Orla, who has since become another beloved member of the household.
