JOHANNESBURG - The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities ( CRL Rights Commission ) has identified botched circumcisions, dehydration and untreated infections as the main causes of the death of 43 initiates.
This as the Commission opened formal investigation into illegal initiation schools after the deaths of initiates across South Africa during the winter initiation season.
This was announced during a media briefing in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
South Africa reported concerning numbers of deaths and illegal initiation schools that were in operation.
About 48 illegal initiation schools were identified countrywide with 42 arrests instituted.
In terms of the deaths, Mpumalanga recorded the highest with 18, Eastern Cape came second with 14, North West recorded 4 while Limpopo had three deaths with two of those in the Sekhukhune District. Gauteng and Free State recorded 2 each.
In Gauteng, one initiate identified as 16 - year old Kgomotso Dibetso Raphethane did not return home after he went missing while he was at an initiation school in Hammanskraal.
The Commission says it will focus on criminality, negligence and failures by the authorities to enforce law.
