 Nigeria’s petrol price 55% below West African average – Dangote The President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has revealed that most Nigerians are unaware that they currently pay 55 per cent of what other West African countries pay for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol). Dangote also said his refinery had aided the reduction of fuel prices by selling petrol between N815 and N820 per litre. The billionaire businessman stated this during a high-level visit to the 650,000 barrels-per-day facility by the President of the Economic Community of West African States Commission, Dr Omar Touray, and his team, according to a statement by the Dangote Group on Sunday.  Terrorists eyeing Nigeria, W’African coastline – US The Commander of United States Africa Command, Gen Michael Langley, has raised the alarm over growing efforts by extremist groups and terrorists in the Sahel to gain access to West Africa’s coastline. Describing recent attacks in Nigeria, the wider Sahel, and the Lake Chad Basin as deeply troubling, Langley warned that terrorist access to the coast would significantly boost their capacity for smuggling and arms trafficking. The Sahel countries of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger is widely regarded as the epicentre of terrorist activity, with insurgent networks linked to ISIS and Al-Qaeda particularly entrenched in Burkina Faso. According to the 2025 Global Terrorism Index, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the Sahel accounted for 19 per cent of all terrorist attacks worldwide and 51 per cent of global terrorism-related deaths in 2024, up from 48 per cent in 2023.  2027: Presidency, APC mount pressure on PDP governors to decamp The Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have intensified pressure on governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to defect. Multiple sources informed Daily Sun that some of the opposition governors are in a fix due to the crisis in the PDP which many of them fear would jeopardise their chances of getting a successful second term.  The pressure to defect comes as the PDP continues to grapple with the crises that have had legal consequences for it in the past. Sources further disclose that PDP governors are concerned about the precedent set in Plateau State, where courts sacked PDP state assembly lawmakers and some National Assembly members due to unresolved internal party crises at the national level.  Customs sells seized petrol at N10,000/25-litre jerrycan The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has approved the immediate auction of seized petrol at a subsidised rate of N10,000 per 25-litre jerrycan. The product was seized at the weekend by its task force tagged under Operation Whirlwind, which  impounded petrol worth over N63 million in the Lagos-Ogun axis. At a press briefing held at the Customs Training College in Ikeja, Lagos, at the weekend, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) Hussein Ejibunu, hailed the seizure as a major success in the fight against economic sabotage. “There is no safe haven for smugglers or economic saboteurs. We will continue to disrupt their activities and reduce them to the barest minimum,” he declared.  Saudi Arabia to translate Arafah sermon in Hausa, Yoruba, Fulani, 34 languages Authorities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have announced that the 2025 Arafah sermon will be broadcast live in Hausa, Yoruba, Fulani and 34 other languages.  Nigeria affected as Saudi Arabia suspends blockwork visa In a sweeping policy shift geared towards managing inbound labour during peak pilgrimage periods, Saudi Arabia has temporarily suspended issuance of the blockwork visa quota to Nigerians and nationals from six other African countries. Other affected include Egypt, Algeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tunisia and Morocco. The suspension, which affected 14 countries in all, impacted other nations such as Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Yemen, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Blockwork visa are quota-based permits that allow Saudi employers to hire a predetermined number of foreign workers. Once approved, the quota allows businesses to apply for work visas for specific candidates. The decision announced by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, affects new and pending temporary work visa applications.
