FG issues alert over rising level of River Niger

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a public warning regarding rising water levels in the River Niger as of August 22, 2024.

This cautionary alert is based on a report from the Niger Basin Authority in Niamey, Niger Republic, which highlighted significant impacts on the current water levels due to activities upstream in Niger and Mali.

Umar Mohammed, the Director General of NIHSA, emphasized in a statement issued on Friday that floodwaters from these countries are expected to gradually flow into Nigeria through Kebbi State. He also mentioned that the operators of the Kainji and Jebba dams along the River Niger have been informed and are prepared to manage the situation. As of August 22, 2024, there has been no overflow of water from the reservoirs of these dams.

NIHSA therefore, advised the states and communities along the River Niger system to stay alert, as floodwaters are anticipated to reach their peak towards the end of August and into September while also assuring them of monitoring and providing regulate updates on the flood situation
