French Student, 24, kills himself after botched beard transplant
A 24-year-old French man tragically ended his life after a disastrous beard transplant in Turkey, according to his devastated father.
Mathieu Vigier Latour splashed out €1,500 ($1,500) for the operation in March, which was significantly cheaper than what it would have cost in France. However, instead of returning home with the perfect beard, he lost 1,000 grafts of hair and had 4,000 transferred from his head to his face.
The botched procedure left him with an irregularly shaped beard and hair growing at an unnatural angle, which his father described as “hedgehog-like."
Jacques Vigier Latour told BFM TV: "He was suffering, he wasn't doing well. He was in pain, suffered from burns, and he couldn't sleep."
After paying over a thousand euros for the procedure, Latour discovered that his surgeon was actually an estate agent and not qualified to perform the surgery, reports the Telegraph.
This traumatic experience led to Latour developing body dysmorphic disorder and falling into a "vicious cycle".
Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental health condition where a person obsessively worries about their appearance. It is estimated to affect between 1.7% and 2.9% of the general population, equating to 5 - 10 million people in the United States.
A Belgium specialist delivered the gut-wrenching news that Latour's scalp would never recover where he lost grafts, dealing another blow to his quest for restoration.
Heartbreakingly, just three months after embarking on a journey to Turkey for the hair transplant, Latour took his own life in his university living quarters.
Determined to make a difference, Latour's dad has taken on a mission to raise the alarm about the dangers of cut-rate surgeries overseas. He declared: "If this testimony could prevent this from happening again and alert everyone, I think that would be a tribute to Mathieu."
Thousands flock to Turkey, lured by its considerably cheaper cosmetic procedures; however, it reportedly tops the charts for surgical disasters and is linked to all plastic surgery issues seen in Britain, as per BAAPS insights.
