M23 says hundreds of Burundi soldiers captured in latest Congo offensive The Rwanda-backed M23 group has captured hundreds of Burundian soldiers during its latest offensive in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a rebel official said, as clashes continued despite a warning from the Trump administration. Last week M23 entered the strategic town of Uvira near the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords.  Nigeria launch contactless passport application system

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced the launch of a digital passport that will enable Nigerians in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and other countries to enjoy a renewal system that will begin on November 1, 2024.

This new contactless system allows Nigerians to renew their passports online, significantly reducing the need for in-person visits to NIS offices.

In a video shared on its official X account (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, the NIS detailed the rollout plans. After Canada, the service will expand to the United Kingdom, United States, and Italy on November 15, with availability in Nigeria and other global locations by December 1.

The statement wrote, “In its continued effort to serve the Nigerian public more efficiently and create a functional system that meets global standards, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a new contactless issuance process starting from November 1st, 2024.”

The new system aims to enhance accessibility for Nigerians living abroad. “Individuals will be able to apply to renew their international passports from the comfort of their homes without having to visit any NIS office,” it added.

Nigerians will be able to renew their passports by downloading the NIS mobile app, which will be available on Google Play, the App Store, and the Windows Store.

Although the app is not yet accessible on these platforms, the NIS confirmed that starting November 1, Nigerians in Canada will be able to download it and begin using the service.
