92 Visually Impaired Candidates Sit for 2025 UTME in Kano

A total of 92 visually impaired candidates, alongside others with Down syndrome and autism, sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) at the Kano centre, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) confirmed on Monday.

The exercise, held at the School of Continuing Education, Bayero University Kano, was conducted under the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG) initiative for special needs candidates.

Prof. Muhammad Yahuza-Bello, Kano centre coordinator and former BUK Vice Chancellor, said the candidates were drawn from Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna States.

He noted that JEOG, introduced by JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede in 2017, aims to provide inclusive access to education, with adaptive materials like braille and typewriters, and trained personnel assisting candidates.

Yahuza-Bello revealed that over 500 special needs candidates are sitting for the UTME nationwide across 11 centres, with the success rate for special needs candidates surpassing that of regular candidates.

JAMB provided free accommodation, feeding, and transportation tokens for all special needs candidates during the exam period.

A former Kano centre candidate, Khadija, now a final-year student at BUK, shared her success story to encourage the candidates.
