Young Man Allegedly Hypnotized, Robbed In Kaduna After Returning from University Exam

A disturbing incident has come to light involving a young man, Azi Shammah Istifanus, who was reportedly hypnotized and robbed shortly after returning from a university exam.

According to his sister, Sharon Demige Istifanus, Azi had just come back from Kachia, where he sat for the post-UTME examination at the Federal University of Applied Science Kachia (FUASK). Upon reaching the AP filling station near their home, a man approached him and simply said, "Follow me." For reasons still unclear, Azi complied without question.

“He didn’t even realize what he was doing,” Sharon said. “He walked past our house and continued all the way to Kakuri. He said they passed through Textile and even greeted people normally.”

Azi reportedly only regained awareness of his actions once they had reached Kakuri, by which time the man had disappeared—along with Azi’s backpack. The stolen items included all his academic credentials, approximately ₦10,000 in cash, two mobile phones, a power bank, clothes, and a wristwatch. Azi reportedly removed the watch himself and handed it over while still under the man’s control.

The family has reported the matter to the police and is urging the public to assist. Anyone who comes across documents bearing the name Azi Shammah Istifanus or has relevant information is encouraged to contact the nearest police station.

“This seems to be a new trick that thieves are using, and it’s very scary,” Sharon warned. “Please be careful out there.”

Tragically, the incident happened on Azi’s birthday—a day that should have been filled with joy. “Instead of celebrating, he is dealing with pain and loss,” Sharon added. “Happy Birthday, Azi. We love you, and we are grateful you’re safe.”

The family is calling on the public to share this story as a warning and to help in recovering Azi’s lost items.
