 Catholic priest reportedly klled in Kogi  A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi Oyetoro, has been reportedly killed by unknown assailants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State. According to reports, the priest was stabbed multiple times along Ajaokuta road on Wednesday, 29th July 2026. His body was found dumped at the roadside.  Rev. Fr. Oyetoro was born in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State and a native of Ayetoro in Ijumu Local Government Area.  Until his death, he served as a priest at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Egbe.  Trump establishes National Purple Heart Day to honor wounded warriors


National Purple Heart Day will be observed annually on August 7, following President Donald Trump’s signing of a proclamation establishing the day on Thursday.

The ceremony at the White House included many Purple Heart recipients and their families, as the president honored the nation’s military personnel. Trump spoke with deep appreciation for the courage and dedication of those who have received the award.

He recalled that General George Washington created the Purple Heart on August 7, 1782, by awarding a purple heart-shaped ribbon to three soldiers for bravery in battle. “Just as George Washington did 243 years ago, today we give our everlasting thanks to you and your unbelievable families,” Trump said, acknowledging the veterans present.

Though Washington first presented the Purple Heart, the award was formalized by General Douglas MacArthur and the War Department in 1932 as a badge for military merit. In 1944, the criteria were tightened to honor those wounded or killed in combat, with nearly 1.9 million service members having received the medal since.

At the ceremony, three Purple Heart recipients—Thomas Matteo, Gerald Enter Jr., and John Ford—presented their medals to Trump in recognition of his survival of a gunshot wound to the right ear during an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024. Trump expressed gratitude for the gesture, noting the sacrifices made by the veterans far exceeded his own.

Trump also honored his 2024 campaign manager, Marine Corps veteran Chris LaCivita, who earned a Purple Heart in 1991 during the Gulf War. Other veterans recognized included Kevin Willette and his son Brian Willette, both wounded in Afghanistan, and military specialist Kevin Brown, who rescued Captain Sam Brown from a damaged Humvee. Brown was recently confirmed as under-secretary for memorial affairs in the Military Affairs Department.

Highlighting the significance of the medal, Trump said the Purple Heart “tells a story of courage, sacrifice and purpose” and symbolizes “a price paid for the soldier beside you, the country behind you, and the generations of Americans yet to come.”

Following his remarks, the president signed the proclamation officially designating August 7 as National Purple Heart Day.
