Dame Patricia Routledge, cherished British actress, dies at 96
Dame Patricia Routledge, the celebrated British actress best known for her role as Hyacinth Bucket in the 1990s sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96.
Her agent confirmed on Friday that Routledge “died peacefully in her sleep this morning, surrounded by love.” Routledge’s career began on stage at the Liverpool Playhouse in the early 1950s, before she moved to Broadway in the 1960s, earning a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1968 for her performance in Darling of the Day.
While she had a distinguished stage career, Routledge became a household name on television. She starred in BBC1’s Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and appeared in adaptations of Talking Heads: A Lady of Letters. Her defining role came in Keeping Up Appearances, where she played the snobbish social climber Hyacinth Bucket for five seasons from 1990 to 1995.
Her agent said, “Even at 96 years old, Dame Patricia’s passion for her work and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as new generations of audiences have continued to find her through her beloved television roles. She will be dearly missed by those closest to her and by her devoted admirers around the world.”
Routledge was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2017 by Queen Elizabeth II, receiving the female equivalent of a knighthood in recognition of her contributions to entertainment.
