Authorities are investigating a massive explosion at an explosives manufacturing plant in rural Tennessee, where first responders say no survivors have been recovered. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed Saturday that all personnel at the Accurate Energetic Systems site, located southwest of Nashville, were killed, though the total number of victims and the cause of the blast remain unknown. “This has probably been one of the most devastating situations that I’ve been on in my career,” Davis said, visibly emotional.
State and federal officials are taking extreme precautions while examining the site. A “rapid DNA” team has been brought in to help identify remains, and roughly 300 emergency personnel are working methodically to manage damaged and volatile explosives. An ambulance and air evacuation helicopter are on site to ensure responder safety. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives supervisory special agent Guy McCormick said investigators are focused on making the area safe before national ATF teams arrive. Davis noted that it could take days, weeks, or even months before foul play is ruled out.
The force of the blast was felt miles away, reaching residents in Lobelville, about a 20-minute drive from the plant. “I thought the house had collapsed with me inside of it,” said Gentry Stover. “I live very close to Accurate and realized about 30 seconds after I woke up that it had to have been that.” Authorities expect the investigation to take several days as they attempt to reconstruct the events leading to the explosion, which occurred shortly before 8 a.m. Friday.
Accurate Energetic Systems operates a 1,300-acre facility in Bucksnort, Tennessee, a rural community about 60 miles southwest of Nashville. The sprawling campus includes eight buildings used for manufacturing, storing, and testing explosives for both military and commercial clients, including aerospace, oil, and demolition industries. Public records indicate the company has held numerous military contracts, producing products ranging from bulk explosives and landmines to small breaching charges. The site is also used for research and testing, including measuring the velocity and impact of explosions under varying environmental conditions. The company’s website emphasizes strict adherence to Defense Department safety and security protocols.
