South Carolina State University went on lockdown Saturday following a reported shooting at a residence hall. The university said shots were fired at Hugine Suites, and officials urged students in the dorm to remain in place while others were instructed to stay away or return to their own residence halls. Some individuals on campus were asked to leave entirely.
No information has been released regarding injuries. The State Law Enforcement Division has been called in to investigate the incident. As a precaution, the university also canceled a homecoming concert that had been scheduled for Saturday night. U.S. Senator Tim Scott said he was closely monitoring the situation and offered prayers for the safety of everyone on campus. South Carolina State University, located in Orangeburg, serves approximately 2,900 students.
