54 hurt in explosion at Jakarta high school mosque

At least 54 people were injured Friday when explosions ripped through a mosque on a high school campus in Jakarta, Indonesia, with most victims reported to be students.

The wounded were taken to nearby hospitals, with injuries ranging from minor to serious, Jakarta City Police Chief Asep Edi Suhaeri said. Authorities have identified a 17-year-old student as the alleged attacker, who was also injured in the blast. The explosions occurred around 12:15 p.m. local time during Friday prayers.

Police and investigators, including Indonesia Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, are examining how the suspect carried out the attack and assembled the explosive device. One student told the government-owned news agency Antara that the suspect brought a homemade bomb to the mosque. Reports indicate the boy had often been bullied and was described by classmates as a "loner" who drew violent images. Witnesses said they saw him lying on the ground after the blast.

Images from Antara showed objects resembling firearms, though Indonesian politician Lodewijk Freidrich Paulus clarified that they were toy guns, not real weapons. One toy gun contained inscriptions referencing “Agartha” and Brenton Tarrant, the New Zealand mosque shooter responsible for the 2019 killings.

Paulus urged the public not to jump to conclusions about the motive, noting that investigators are still determining whether the incident constitutes a terrorist act.
