AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Divers uncover more than 450 pounds of cocaine hidden under ship heading to Europe, Colombian navy says

Colombian navy divers uncovered more than 450 pounds of cocaine hidden beneath a ship preparing to sail to Europe, authorities announced Tuesday.

The operation took place at a Pacific coast port, where divers from the Buenaventura Coast Guard Station conducted an underwater inspection of the Europe-bound merchant vessel. During the search, they found seven sealed bags containing the suspected narcotics. Photos released by the Navy showed divers retrieving the drugs and the packages displayed on the ground.

The seizure comes shortly after the navy reported confiscating over seven tons of drugs from two speedboats and a semi-submersible vessel in the Pacific Ocean. Video and images from that operation showed multiple packages on board and alleged suspects being taken from the water.

Colombia remains a major source of cocaine for the United States, with authorities estimating that roughly 90% of U.S.-bound cocaine originates there. The government has been under pressure from the U.S. to combat drug trafficking, and recent operations like this are part of ongoing efforts to intercept shipments before they reach international markets.
