AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  Igbo People Control Markets Across Nigeria, Yet they are Still Denied power- Hon. Chidi Ofoegbu (Former Imo State governorship Aspirant)

According to a video posted on Signature TV, former Imo governorship Aspirant, Hon. Chidi Ofoegbu addressed the persistent discourse surrounding the political involvement of the Igbo people within the Nigerian landscape, focusing specifically on their electoral capacity, economic impact, and representation in governance.

During a broadcast interview, he dismissed the narrative that the Igbo community is politically passive or lacks sufficient voting influence as mere propaganda that has been circulated for decades.

He pointed out that the Igbo population is uniquely distributed throughout Nigeria, with a significant presence in every geopolitical zone, from northern commercial hubs like Kano and Sokoto to southern regions such as Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

While addressing this issue, Hon. Chidi Ofoegbu stated, “Igbo People Control Markets Across Nigeria, Yet Power Is Still Denied Them.”

He suggested that the apprehension surrounding this widespread economic dominance is a primary factor behind the hesitation of other regions to back Igbo candidates for the highest national offices. By analysing recent voter registration statistics, he highlighted that millions of Igbo citizens are registered to vote not just in the South-East, but across the South-South, South-West, and Northern territories.

He argued that if these collective figures were strategically mobilised, the Igbo electorate would possess the numerical strength to determine the outcome of national polls.

Hon. Ofoegbu emphasised that the core challenge is not a lack of people or electoral power, but rather a deficiency in internal cohesion and strategic foresight. He asserted that once the Igbo people recognise their inherent potential and align their efforts, their political relevance will become impossible for any other region to overlook.
