AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. A HIGH-STAKES STANDOFF HAS DEVELOPED IN THE COMMERCIAL HUB OF ONITSHA AS THE SELF-STYLED "UNITED STATES OF BIAFRA" (USB) ISSUED A COUNTER-DIRECTIVE CHALLENGING THE ANAMBRA STATE GOVERNMENT’S RECENT CLOSURE OF THE ONITSHA MAIN MARKET.(PHOTO).

A high-stakes standoff has developed in the commercial hub of Onitsha as the self-styled "United States of Biafra" (USB) issued a counter-directive challenging the Anambra State Government’s recent closure of the Onitsha Main Market.

The dispute began on Monday, January 26, 2026, when Governor Charles Soludo ordered the immediate one-week shutdown of the iconic market.

The Governor’s decision followed a personal visit to the site, where he found shops closed in compliance with the long-standing, though officially abolished, Monday "sit-at-home" order. Soludo characterized the traders' refusal to open as "economic sabotage" and warned that continued defiance would result in longer sealings.

In a swift response, Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, identifying herself as the Deputy Prime Minister of the "United States of Biafra," issued a "Breaking" alert via her verified social media handle. Her statement ordered all traders to disregard the Governor’s closure and reopen their shops tomorrow, Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

The USB's statement framed the sit-at-home as a "voluntary" civil disobedience measure aimed at securing the release of separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu Currently serving a life sentence in Sokoto following a conviction in late 2025 and Simon Ekpa Reportedly detained in Finland on terrorism-related charges.

Orabueze’s directive labeled Governor Soludo’s administration "delegitimized" and "illegal," further escalating tensions by claiming that a "USB Elite Squad" and a "Secretary of Defence Gen Rabbi" would be deployed to ensure "full compliance" and protect traders from state security agents.
