 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  PRESIDENT TINUBU HONOURS FALLEN HEROES AT AFCRD 2026 AS COAS, SERVICE CHIEFS PAY SOLEMN TRIBUTE


President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on Thursday, 15 January 2026, led the nation in solemn remembrance of Nigeria’s fallen heroes during the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) 2026 at the National Cenotaph, Eagle Square, Abuja. The deeply reflective ceremony served as a moment of national gratitude for officers and men who laid down their lives in defence of the country’s peace, unity and sovereignty.


The President was represented at the occasion by the Vice President, His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON who laid a wreath on behalf of the President in honour of the brave personnel who paid the supreme sacrifice in service to the nation.


The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, NAM joined the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, AFM other Service Chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police in laying wreaths to honour the courage, sacrifice and enduring legacy of Nigeria’s fallen heroes. The gesture highlights the relentless commitment of the Armed Forces and security agencies to uphold the values of patriotism, selflessness and loyalty to the fatherland.


The ceremony was attended by an array of dignitaries, including the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun,  the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) OFR and other members of the Federal Executive Council, heads of security agencies, members of the diplomatic corps, senior officers, serving and retired, members of the Nigerian Legion and other distinguished guests. Together, they paid heartfelt tribute to the men and women whose sacrifices continue to inspire national resolve and collective remembrance.
