AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Property, Goods Destroyed As Fire Engulfs 28 Apartments yesterday In Okpoko, Anambra State.

Residents of No. 32 Orumba Street, Okpoko, in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, were thrown into confusion in the early hours of Monday, January 26, 2026, as a fire engulfed a residential building, destroying twenty-eight apartments, including several shops.

According to the landlord of the building, Mr. Kingsley Oguejiofor, the fire started shortly after power was restored at about 2 a.m. He said he was awakened by shouts from tenants, only to discover that the building was already in flames.

They made frantic efforts to put out the fire but could not salvage anything, as it spread rapidly and reduced the building to ashes.

Some of the affected shop owners who spoke to ABS said they received phone calls informing them that their shops were on fire, but before they could get to the scene, the entire building had already been engulfed, making them unable to retrieve any items from their shops.

They lamented that they had only recently restocked and were left confused about how to start again at the beginning of the year.

Men of the Nigerian Police Force, led by the Divisional Police Officer of Okpoko Division, CSP Ewelu Owai, alongside community stakeholders, came scene to maintain order and assess the level of damage.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire could not be ascertained, though residents suspect it may have been triggered by an electrical surge following power restoration.
