SNOWSTORM DELAYS OLYMPIC SLOPESTYLE AND FREESTYLE EVENTS IN THE ITALIAN ALPS. (PHOTO).

Snowstorm delays Olympic slopestyle and freestyle events in the Italian Alps

The women’s snowboarding slopestyle final at the Olympics was canceled Tuesday in Livigno due to a heavy snowstorm. The event had been scheduled for 1 p.m. local time, but organizers called it off, and no rescheduled date has been announced. The delay affects New Zealander Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, who qualified first on Sunday and was aiming for a repeat victory. The opening round had itself been moved up a day because of earlier storm activity.

Other events in Livigno were also impacted. Freestyle aerials qualifying was postponed, and the men’s ski big air finals remain scheduled for later Tuesday. On Monday night, the women’s big air contest was delayed for more than an hour due to strong winds, with Canada’s Megan Oldham winning and Eileen Gu finishing second. In slopestyle, snowboarders perform tricks on rails and ramps, but heavy snow and wind can slow the track or disrupt their jumps. By midday Tuesday, more than 4 inches (10 centimeters) of snow had fallen, and the men’s slopestyle final is now set for Wednesday, when conditions are expected to improve.
