  The National Universities Commission (NUC) has directed vice-chancellors of universities to commence academic activities on January 18, in accordance with the directive of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) team on Covid-19. Universities in Nigeria have been closed since following a strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as well as the Coronavirus pandemic. ASUU suspended its 9-month old strike on December 23, 2020 after the federal government met their demands, including paying the lecturers their outstanding salaries using an older payment platform, GIFMIS, different from the controversial IPPIS. The NUC says following the approval given by the Presidential Task Force on COVID19, universities can now resume academic activities.   As Nigerians struggle to acquire the National Identity Number, NIN, from offices of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, across the country it has come to the knowledge of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, that some unscrupulous persons are cashing in on the excercise to induce enrollees to sell their NIN for a fee. The buyers of the numbers are also trading with them to persons whose motives are anything but noble. The EFCC wishes to alert Nigerians that it is not only illegal to sell their NIN, they stand the risk of vicarious liability for any act of criminality linked to their NIN. In other words, they risk arrest and prosecution for any act of criminality linked to their NIN whether or not they are directly responsible for such crimes. The Commission warns members of the public against selling their NIN and to report anyone seeking to buy their NIN, to the nearest office of the EFCC or other law enforcement agencies.

  Governor Samuel Ortom says the Benue State Security Council will meet next week to review the situation in Katsina-Ala and Ukum, following the ban on motorcycles in the area. The Governor’s attention has been drawn to reports of the destruction of impounded motorcycles in Ukum and Katsina-Ala, and he gives assurance that the Security Council will review the ongoing operation in the affected areas. The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, today donated some household items to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) during a visit by the officials of the agencies to the Ministry. In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Dr. Yusuf Jimoh, stated that the idea of donating to both agencies was mooted last year during the Ministry’s courtesy visit to some select Federal government agencies, including NAPTIP and NDLEA, adding that the visit exposed the needs of the Agencies for food and other essential items.
