Lagos police launch investigation as jeweller  accuses its officers of harassment The Lagos State Police Command said it has commenced an investigation into a viral video of a jeweller accusing some policemen in the Festac area of the state of harassing him.  The command disclosed this in an X post on Saturday. The video, which circulated on X on Saturday morning, shows the businessman engaged in a struggle with some policemen. Later in the video, the businessman could be seen with a bloody face after allegedly sustaining a cut beside his right eye during the struggle with the police officers,  The jeweller later explained that the policemen from the Festac Division had stopped him for a routine search.  Cuba Joins South Africa's Lawsuit Against Israel in ICJ Cuba joined South Africa's lawsuit against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Cuban Foreign Ministry said. The move is aimed primarily at "stopping the atrocities against the Palestinian people as a result of Israel's disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force," said the statement. On December 29, 2023, South Africa initiated legal proceedings against Israel at the ICJ, citing violations of the 1948 Genocide Convention in relation to Palestinians in Gaza. Following South Africa's lead, other countries have also joined the lawsuit against Israel.

It said the single multipurpose card combining multiple functions of identity, financial and social services will be made available to citizens across the country by August this year.  Pele’s mother, Celeste Arantes, dies at age 101 Celeste Arantes, the mother of Brazilian football legend Pele, has died aged 101, outliving her famous son by 18 months, the family announced Friday. Arantes was 17 when she gave birth to her first child on October 23, 1940, a baby who would grow up to be the man widely considered the greatest footballer of all time. “Rest in peace, grandma,” Pele’s eldest son Edinho wrote on Instagram, a message illustrated with a photo of him hugging his grandmother. No details were given on the cause of death. According to local media Arantes had been hospitalized for eight days and died on Friday. At the time of her son’s death, family members said Arantes had cognitive difficulties and was unaware her world-famous son had died. Arantes, who married Pele’s father, Joao Ramos do Nascimento, at the age of 16, also had another son, Jair, who died in 2020 of cancer, the same illness that claimed Pele’s life.
