 Prince William and Kate Middleton bring George, Charlotte and Louis to Commonwealth Games for first Scotland public outing Prince William and Kate Middleton brought their three children to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, marking the siblings’ first official public appearance in Scotland. The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 44, attended the sporting event on Saturday, Aug. 1, during their summer break with Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8. While in Scotland, where William and Kate are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, the family spent time with Team Wales athletes and their families. The couple also visited SportsAid, an organisation that supports young athletes. Kate has served as patron of the organisation since 2013. WTO CHIEF KICKS AGAINST 'CATASTROPHIC' TIT-FOR-TAT TARIFFS. (PHOTO).

  World Trade Organisation chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala urged nations Thursday to keep calm over tariffs, warning that a tit-for-tat trade war would be “catastrophic” for the world economy. Okonjo-Iweala issued her appeal during a panel discussion on tariffs at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in a week that saw US President Donald Trump threaten tariffs against China, the European Union, Mexico and Canada. The WTO director-general urged cooler heads to prevail, quipping: “Please let’s not hyperventilate. I know we are here to discuss tariffs. I’ve been saying to everybody: could we chill, also. I just sense a lot of hyperventilation.” She recalled the fallout from the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act in the United States during the Great Depression in 1930, which prompted retaliation and worsened the global economic crisis at the time.

The Federal Government approved a 50 per cent increase after operators initially requested a 100 per cent hike. However, subscribers are pushing for a 10 per cent adjustment, and if talks fail, they plan to file a lawsuit next week to challenge the decision. The hike, the first in over a decade, is aimed at revitalising the struggling telecom sector, which contributes about 14 per cent to Nigeria’s economy, and has continued to spark widespread debates and controversies. IMO LAWYERS BOYCOTT COURTS TO PROTEST COLLEAGUE'S MURDER. (PHOTO).

  Following the gruesome murder of an Imo State-based lawyer, Chinedu George Nwowu, all the courts within the Mgbidi, Oguta and Omuma areas of the state were ordered shut by the Nigeria Bar Association on Thursday. Nwowu was on Wednesday night shot dead along the Mgbidi Highway by yet-to-be-identified gunmen after they intercepted him and dragged him out from his car. Following the killing, the NBA, Orlu branch, announced the closure of all courts within the area. The branch, in a memo issued on Thursday by Chukwuemeka Okoro, notified lawyers that an emergency meeting would be held by 10 am on the same day at the High Court premises in Mgbidi. Meanwhile, the Imo State police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, has confirmed the incident even as he said they had commenced an investigation into the killing. He said the police would not allow the perpetrators of the killing to get away with their crime and assured the people that the police were on top of the case.

 Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Thursday, slammed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, calling him a “transactional politician” whose loyalty shifts with his personal ambitions. In a caustic press release issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser for Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, Governor Mohammed responded directly to remarks made by Wike during a recent media chat. Wike had criticised Mohammed’s opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills. Gidado described Wike’s attacks as “baseless” and “hypocritical.” The governor’s spokesman said Wike’s political career owed much to the opportunities provided by the PDP.

 Nigeria Customs Service Begins Nationwide Destruction of Illicit Pharmaceuticals  In collaboration with other regulatory agencies, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced the nationwide destruction of expired and fake pharmaceutical products, a concerted effort to combat the proliferation of unapproved and harmful substances. Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, (ACG) Timi Bomodi, from the Enforcement, Inspection, and Investigation Department, led the initial phase of the operation on Thursday, 22 January 2025, at the Alaro Dump site in Epe, Lagos. Bomodi, who also chairs a committee on identifying, isolating, evacuating and destroying illegal imports, established by the National Security Adviser (NSA), emphasised the significance of the nationwide exercise. "We're starting here in Lagos, specifically with about 88 containers. We'll also be going to Port Harcourt, where we have over 20 containers. Then we'll go to Calabar, Kano, and other locations"....

The initiative, announced by Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwada, during the launch of the 2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan in Abuja, aims to address Nigeria's growing humanitarian challenges. The cash transfer programme, set to run from February to April, will prioritize women, particularly widows, pregnant women, and those living with disabilities, focusing on families affected by displacement in conflict-prone regions such as Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.
