An Ikoyi Magistrate’s Court, this week, imposed N30,000 fines on 51 persons, with an option of community service, for reckless waste disposal, at different locations in the state.

The environmental offenders carried out their community service at places such as General Hospital Odan, Lagos Island and Maryland bus stop.

The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, commended the court's resolute stance in combating environmental offences. He reiterated the state government's zero-tolerance policy for indiscriminate waste dumping, emphasising that waste management regulations would be rigorously enforced.

Dr. Gbadegesin noted that responsible waste management is both a legal and moral obligation. He urged every individual to take ownership of their environment, highlighting the importance of preserving the beauty and sustainability of communities in the state.

This recent series of convictions and community service orders reflects a concerted effort by LAWMA and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) to clamp down on indiscriminate waste dumping.

It underscores the commitment of the state government to establishing a proper waste management culture for the well-being of all residents. The ongoing crackdown is a clear message that environmental offenders will face the full wrath of the law.
