Rebels to withdraw from key DR Congo town 'after US request' The M23 rebel group has said it would withdraw from the eastern DR Congo town of Uvira at the request of the US administration, which had criticised seizure of the town last week as a threat to mediation efforts. The rebels entered Uvira, on the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met with US President Donald Trump in Washington and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept." FG declares state of emergency in health sector

Federal Government has declared a state of emergency in the country’s health sector.

This declaration comes as stakeholders from the sector gather in Ekiti State for the 64th National Council on Health, where important issues regarding the health sector will be discussed.

During the opening ceremony on Thursday, the focus was on setting the tone for the event. The theme revolves around building a resilient and inclusive healthcare system for a healthy Nigeria.

Dr Muhammed Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, emphasised that Nigeria’s health facilities are in poor condition and require urgent intervention.

Biodun Oyebanji, the governor of Ekiti State, expressed his excitement at hosting the 64th National Council on Health and having delegates from across the country, including international stakeholders in health policy development, attend the council meeting.

He highlighted the state’s significant achievements in the health sector over the past few years.

In a recent motion during a plenary session in Abuja, a Lagos lawmaker, Fayinka Oluwatoyin (APC), called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the sector and allocate substantial funds to it in the 2024 budget.
