Stop Selling Expired Goods Or Face Sealing Of Businesses - Anambra Environment Commissioner Warns Shop Owners

By Lilian Akpunonu

In line with the directive of Governor Chukwuma Soludo to create a livable and enabling environment, the Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Felix Odimegwu through the Environmental Health Officers of the Ministry has warned shop owners to desist from selling expired goods to consumers.

As part of the Anambra State Government's efforts to safeguard public health and safety, Environmental Health Officers from the Ministry of Environment sealed off shops located on Ifite Road near All Saints Anglican Church in Awka.

The inspection revealed a large amount of expired goods, including soft drinks, fruit extractions, bottled water, wine, Lucozade Boost and other items that were no longer suitable for human consumption.

Speaking about the incident, the Director for Environmental Health and Pollution Control Department, Mrs Oluchi Nwankwu said it is unfortunate that despite warnings from the ministry against selling expired goods, some shops still stock expired products in large quantities for sale.

The expiry dates on some of the confiscated items were as far back as 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020, indicating that the shops had been stocking and selling these goods for an extended period.

Mrs. Nwankwu cautioned against the consumption of expired goods, explaining that such items could have detrimental effects on the kidneys, lungs, and overall health.

She urged the public to make it a habit to check the expiry dates on products before purchasing them. She also warned shop owners to stop selling expired goods, stressing that any shop caught doing so would be sealed as it is a serious offense.

The seal off operation was led by Sanitary Officer, Dubem Chukwujekwu of the Environmental Health Department of the Ministry of Environment.
