Kenya to Host Africa-France Summit for the First Time in 2026

On Wednesday, 25th September 2024, during a meeting at the United Nations General Assembly, French President Emmanuel Macron and Kenyan President William Ruto announced that Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, will host the next Africa-France Summit in early 2026. This will be the first time the summit is held in an English-speaking country since its beginning in 1973, which took place in Paris under French President Georges Pompidou.

The Africa-France Summit aims to strengthen ties between France and African countries. Originally started in 1973 by Niger's President Hamani Diori under Pompidou’s leadership, the summit was created to improve France’s relations with African nations in the post-colonial era. Over the years, these meetings have evolved to cover important topics such as economic growth, political cooperation, social development, climate action, and security.

While the summit was once centered around France’s relationships with its former colonies, many of which are French-speaking members of La Francophonie, the event has now expanded to include other African nations. However, until now, only French-speaking countries and France have hosted these meetings. The 2026 summit in Nairobi will be different, as Kenya is neither a French-speaking country nor a member of La Francophonie.
