 Lagos Court Jails NOGASA Chair, Fatuyi Phillips 21 Years  for N43.5m Fraud    Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday, November 18, 2024, convicted and sentenced Fatuyi Yemi Philips, Chairman, Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria, NOGASA, to 21 years imprisonment for N43.5m fraud.   The Lagos Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on April 5, 2022, arraigned Philips alongside his firm, Oceanview Oil and Gas Limited, on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N43, 502,000.00   Count one reads: "Fatuyi Yemi Philips and Oceanview Oil and Gas Nigeria Limited, on or about the 28th day of September, 2016 at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, obtained the aggregate sum of N43, 502,000.00 from Elochukwu Okoye and Elebana Unique Ventures Nigeria Limited on behalf of WAPCIL Nigeria Limited under the false rep

 UK PLANS TO NOMINATE NIGERIAN BORN LAWYER AS JUDGE IN ICJ


The United Kingdom has announced its intention to nominate  Dapo Akande, a distinguished professor in public international law at the University of Oxford, for the position of judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2026.


In a formal statement, Joanna Roper,  UK ambassador to the Netherlands and representative to the ICJ, expressed the UK's delight in nominating Professor Akande. “The UK is pleased to announce that Professor Dapo Akande will be nominated for election as a judge to the International Court of Justice in 2026 by the UK National Group,” the statement reads. 


Highlighting  his exceptional legal expertise and extensive experience in the field of international law, she emphasized that Professor Akande's nomination reflects the UK's unwavering commitment to international justice, human rights, and the rule of law on the global stage.


Born and raised in Ibadan, Nigeria, Professor Akande received his LLB at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and has since established himself as a respected figure in public international law. 


With his 25years of legal experience Prof. Akande’s career includes serving as a consultant to prominent international organizations such as the International Criminal Court (ICC), the United Nations, the African Union (AU), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), among others.


His legal career has seen him involved in international litigation before key judicial bodies, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
