Burkina Faso suspends Voice of America for insurgency report Burkina Faso's junta has suspended US-funded broadcaster Voice of America for three months over comments about a militant insurgency in West Africa's Sahel region, and temporarily banned local news outlets from using any international media reports, authorities. The superior council for communication (CSC) accused Voice of America (VOA) of demoralising troops in Burkina Faso and neighbouring Mali in a discussion on September 19 that was also broadcast by a private local radio station. It said the reporter described an attack on Bamako last month as "courageous", criticised security operations and provided an unfounded death toll for an attack on a Burkina Faso town that killed hundreds in August, according to Reuters. Last month, the CSC withdrew the radio frequencies of France's popular RFI radio, which regularly reports on the Sahel. It did not provide an explanation for its removal.

Grégoire Owona Calls for Punishment Against Spreaders of False News About Paul Biya's Death

Amid rumors circulating on social media and some news outlets about the death of President Paul Biya, the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Grégoire Owona, has urged authorities to take strict action against those spreading such falsehoods.

Grégoire Owona, visibly upset by the claims, expressed his frustration on social media. He stated:

"Those who mislead the public by announcing the death of Cameroon’s Head of State must face serious consequences for such a blatant lie. Since they lack basic human decency, the relevant authorities must act firmly against these impostors, regardless of where they are or where their messages come from. We live in a democracy, but there's a limit to cruelty and hatred."

Owona's reaction came after a persistent rumor, spread by ABS TV, a channel reportedly associated with separatists in support of the imaginary state of Ambazonia, claimed Paul Biya had died. This rumor was further shared by multiple social media pages.

President Biya, who left Cameroon in early September, was last seen attending the China-Africa Economic Forum, which concluded on September 7. Following this, he was reported to have traveled to Switzerland and was expected to attend the 79th UN General Assembly and the Francophonie summit, but he was absent from both events. Some media sources claim the 91-year-old president had surgery and is in critical condition, though no official statement has confirmed or denied this.
