 BADAGRY ANGELS WIN LAGOS SOFTBALL TOURNEY  Badagry Angels have been crowned champions of the Lagos U-15 Softball Championship held recently at the Badagry Grammar School playing field, Badagry. The five-day tournament, which began on November 11, 2024, ended on Friday, November 15 where eight teams participated in the competition designed to drive the growth of the sport at the grassroots level. As Champions of the tournament, Badagry Angels showcased their dexterity and skills against Rak Angels in the grand finale, maintaining their good position and dominance on the field before finally trouncing their opponents 9 runs to 1.  Africa CDC Approves First Locally Made Mpox Test from Morocco


The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has officially endorsed Morocco's first locally produced mpox test, marking a significant achievement in the fight against the virus across the continent. The test, a real-time PCR diagnostic tool, can rapidly detect mpox DNA in blood, saliva, or tissue samples. 


This endorsement, announced on Thursday, follows the Africa CDC's declaration of the mpox outbreak as a public health emergency three months ago. The approval highlights the test's reliability and effectiveness in detecting the virus, underscoring the African Union's ongoing efforts to enhance the self-sufficiency of public health systems on the continent.


The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously approved the Alinity m MPXV assay, another mpox diagnostic test, which detects the virus from lesion swabs. Since the beginning of the year, more than 50,000 cases of mpox and around 1,100 deaths have been reported across Africa, with Central Africa accounting for the majority of cases and fatalities.


Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease transmitted from infected animals to humans and can spread through close human-to-human contact. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and large skin lesions, and it can be fatal if not properly managed.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
