More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged. The rapid escalation has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee within Congo and into neighboring Burundi and Rwanda, it added. Many people fleeing the violence have crossed into Burundi, with over 50,000 new arrivals reported between Dec. 6 and 11, nearly half of them children, UNICEF said, adding that the numbers are expected to rise as more displaced are identified. “Chi...

Bode George Urges Wike to Resolve Dispute with Fubara, Stresses No One is Above PDP

Elder statesman Bode George has urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to end his ongoing conflict with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Speaking to the press on Thursday, George criticized party members and leaders for failing to intervene and hold Wike accountable. He emphasized that no one is bigger than the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and warned against allowing any individual to dominate the party.

George questioned the cause of the friction in Rivers State, asking, "What exactly has Governor Fubara done wrong? Why are party members indifferent to what’s happening in the state?" He reminded the party that Wike had played a key role in Fubara’s rise to the governorship, a fact Wike himself has acknowledged. George condemned those supporting Wike’s attempts to destabilize the state, accusing him of trying to control Rivers from Abuja.

George also criticized Wike’s previous threats to other governors, questioning why the APC government had not sanctioned him and why the PDP had not taken action. He suggested that party leaders who contribute to the division should leave the party if they are truly aligned with the APC.

In a personal appeal to Wike, George said, "You are like a son to me. I ask you to calm down. I understand you were hurt by friends during the last presidential election. Let’s move beyond the past and focus on the party’s progress. No one is bigger than the party."
